HOUSKEEPING

Sorry about the sparse blogging, folks but, with Odie's much appreciated help and his crystal clear instructions, (he also made the new header for me), I've been able to change to this much bigger layout, which makes posting a lot easier as it removes the guesswork from how the finished article will actually look when posted. Tidying up the old posts for the new layout has also been time consuming - but it's all sorted out now - so normal service will be resumed very soon - see you then.

Wow, it's a whopper Spidey!

Looking good but now you're making me feel guilty as I have been meaning to tidy up mine for weeks and I still desperately need to update my blogroll too. Still . . . you can't rush these things, eh. It's all in the planning, so they tell me ;)

Don't hang about, Spidey, there's a lot going down!

Barking Spider said...

Absolutely, Gotty, it's like any DIY/decorating job - it's all in the preparation, mate! ;)

It is rather large, isn't it? :-D

Barking Spider said...

Absolutely, Gotty, it's like any :)

Barking Spider said...

I'm back, OR, right with you, mate! :)

Barking Spider said...

Seems to be loading better too, was getting a bit sticky back there ;) .

I noticed that, too, Banned - but I've been having trouble with Firefox seizing up when I visit blogs with certain scripting on there, (a Google one, I think). It causes a real problem with posting, too.
Once that happens, everything becomes very sluggish no matter whose blog I visit. Firefox won't even shut down properly so I have to do a force shutdown and completely re-start the computer to resolve the problem. >:o

A quicker way of killing firefox, Spidey:

1) Start --> Run
2) In the edit box, type in: tskill firefox
3) Click OK

No need to reboot!

I prefer this layout and it also loads quicker, here.

Coincidentally, I've also been tweaking my template. Must be something in the air!

Drat! That post was mine - forgot to sign in!

Barking Spider said...

Thanks for the info, Fausty, that will make things a lot easier. :)

I'm glad to hear that it's loading quicker, I've been finding that, too, it caught me by surprise when I first tried it. :-D
I imagine it helps having posts that are no longer scrolling all the way down the page as they are fitting easily into the wider space. There's been a lot of tweaking going on recently - it must be the time of year! ;)

Barking Spider said...

Ooops! Wasn't thinking, there, Fausty - "Run" is XP - it doesn't appear in Vista or Windows7, which are the two I'm working with here. Any ideas?

Barking Spider said...

I don't know Vista or Win7 but will guess ...

In the equivalent of \windows\system32, there should be a file called cmd.exe. This is the 'window' to DOS. Assuming that Vista/Win7 still use DOS and that they haven't killed off XP DOS commands, try the following:

1) Open notepad
2) type in: [path to cmd.exe]\cmd.exe tskill firefox
3) Save the file to your desktop and give it a BAT extension (if you want instructions, yell).

Now you just need to double-click the batch file you created in notepad to kill firefox.

Barking Spider said...

For example, on my system, instruction 2 would look like this:

c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe tskill firefox.

The first part of the instruction (i.e., the bit before the space) calls the CMD programme. The second part of the instruction (after the space) is the parameter.

Barking Spider said...

Thanks for that, Fausty, leave it with me - I probably will need your help at some stage. :)

As you guys like to say, large is good ;)
Come to think of it, many women have been known to say that too :-P

It's totally awesome! Odie helped me with my blog a few months ago too. He made the header and widened it up,
you'll love how you can post really huge video's now, Spidey!
Looking good!
PS: Thanks for all the squirrels! They are adorable, the red ones! They have the cutest ears....the ones in my yard and on my page will be jealous! They are watching you :)

Barking Spider said...

Looking good mate

Barking Spider said...

Thanks, Ollie, it's taken the guesswork out of posting as well. ;)

Barking Spider said...

I love it, Bunni, and Odie's instructions were so easy to follow it was painless - for me, at least - he did all the work at his end!

I knew you'd like those red squirrels - I saved them all to a new folder when I came across the website with Opera Link. ;) :-D

Naughty girl! :-D

Barking Spider said...

Hey, Spidey. Love the width and banner. Site looks great!

Barking Spider said...

Spiderman, I'm happy to see that you're preparing the blog for the General Election.

Barking Spider said...

Cheers, Nickie, it looks like you guys are going to have a Lefty electoral massacre in November just like we are in May! ;)

Barking Spider said...

Thanks, SB, I have so much room, now! :-D

Barking Spider said...

It's fun to read all of this Spidey ... Oh, Bunni, naughty girl.

Thank you so much for the sidebar link. That's way above and beyond. Like I say Spidey, that's the fun part of computing for me ... the design and tweaking.

Barking Spider said...

My pleasure, Odie, I'm very grateful for your help and guidance, mate, and I'm delighted with the result. :-D

Barking Spider said...

I wrote my memoirs, for the early years...hee hee
The latter years will be an expose...and no, not THAT kind ;)

Barking Spider said...

Lovin' it! Well done you! Keep on keepin' on Spidey! ;) x

I had to do some housework on mine. Bloody Internet Explorer rendered an unsightly strip of grey along the top, where I'd removed the option to report my blog for "offensive" content :-D With a bit of jiggery pokery from my web design days I managed to get it fixed up. I hate Microsoft.

Looking forward to when normal service is resumed round these here parts :-P

Barking Spider said...

And a good job on your layout, by the way. Optimal line length for text :)

Barking Spider said...

Ha! :-D

Barking Spider said...

Thanks, TP, all the more room for ranting at Brown and the rest of them! :-D

Barking Spider said...

What's on your mind...

Barking Spider said...

Everything looks much better and loads much faster with Firefox, CS, I don't use IE anymore - it's so slow and I haven't the patience to wait for it. ;)

Barking Spider said...

Thanks, CS, it's as big as it will go , now, and the sidebar is much better now too - 330px instead of 220px.

Barking Spider said...

Thanks, CS, it's as big as it will go , now, and the sidebar is much better now too - 330px instead of 220px. :-P

I'll be back very soon, mate, as soon as I can find something to rant about.

(now, then, what's Brown been up to today?) >:o

Barking Spider said...

Looking good Spidey! And it is easier to comment.

Barking Spider said...

Thanks, Ron, you get a bit more swinging room in the comments, but the site is loading a lot faster, too, since I made the changes, which all helps. :)

Barking Spider said...

Nice looking web site. I also get the continously loading page with Firefox sometimes (not on this page), often on local newspaper sites, I think its something to do with adverts.
I close down firefox (but it still runs in the background) then use ctrl/alt/delete, switch to processes, click on Firefox and then stop. Its quicker than rebooting the computer.

Keep up the good work.

Barking Spider said...

Good stuff and go to it rightly.

Barking Spider said...

I love the new site. The photo cube generator looks very cool with the spidey avatar!

Barking Spider said...

Thanks, Sue, I like the cube, myself. :-D

Barking Spider said...

I'm ready for them, James. ;)

Barking Spider said...

Thanks, BTT, and thanks a lot for the info, it's easy to follow and easy to do. :-D
